why I need men in my life

Last Friday my final documentary project was shown at our school’s ~film festival. It’s about visible mental illness and I purposefully made it only about women (that’s what I always do, I’ve only ever interviewed one man for all seven projects I’ve made). When I first proposed the idea to the class a few weeks ago (we had to make pitches), this one obnoxious kid who never shuts up told me “I’m worried that there aren’t going to be any men in this, won’t that be pretty biased? I mean you’re cutting out half the population.” I told him that I only ever talk about women because their voices are not heard nearly as much as (white) men’s and that was what I was going to do. I wanted to tell him to STFU but that would not have been ~proper class etiquette.

Today he told me that he really liked my doc and that even though at first he had objected to my focus on women, now he thinks it worked really well even though there weren’t any men in it.

like I know that I’m “supposed” to be happy that he ~changed his mind~ and shit but the way he said both things to me was so condescending. He talks to all women like that and is pretty much the prototypical white cis straight male artsy filmmaker that I keep encountering in my documentary classes. He’s also a Nice Guy.
