TWO DYKES, UGLY BY TRADITIONAL STANDARDS

dykesanddykery:

huddle together after staying death for the day.

The white one whose bigness makes her look soft

holds the head of the beige one

whose drag makes her look hard

They rock each other to stay awake

to stay asleep to stay alive

exchanging softness and hardness

making themselves beautiful and strong

against death every day

Disfigured a little, perhaps,

by the small gun

beating against their mutual breast

A poem from Because Mourning Sickness is a Staple in My Country, which is “a collection of poetry by working-class dykes who have been going through changes and writing poems, among other things.” It was published in 1979 in Iowa City, and you can view the entire thing online here.

FACT: Gentlemen, just because I’m a lesbian doesn’t mean I have some magic advice to help you get a girlfriend

My Mother Tries, Bless Her Heart

ladyloud:

So tonight I was showing my mom noteleanor’s documentary on my college’s annual drag dance (which you should go watch if only because it ends in me running at the camera with an invisible chainsaw while dressed as a lumberjack). And I don’t think she really got it. And it ended with her asking “How did you feel dressed like that? I mean you’re not, like, Chaz Bono are you? Trapped in a woman’s body?” and I said no, I’m not trans I’m just butch, and she said “But what does that mean?” and I had to sort of awkwardly and failingly explain what butch means in really simple terms and then say in clear terms that I IDed as a woman.

*sniff* I am so touched you would link my doc. :’D

in terms of actually replying to your question: I have a similar problem with my parents, although their responses are different. They don’t ask questions, they just awkwardly respond “…okay” and leave it at that, but admittedly I think my parents know what things like butch, femme, etc., mean (or they could be wrong). Since you’re good at writing it out, you might want to write out what you want to say, then say it to your parents? That seems kind of weird and convoluted, but it might work. Also, I think you’re more eloquent than you let on. Of course, it’s possible you’re different when you’re talking to your parents, but having had discussions with you IRL and heard you talk in class, I think you’re very well-spoken when it comes to issues you know a lot about and are passionate about.

You might also try being direct with your parents, if they’re open to that. Just let them know that it’s hard for you that you can’t talk to them about this part of your life because they don’t know anything about it, and ask that they be patient, willing to listen, etc.

I hope this helped. If not…good luck. (I AM SO GOOD AT THIS)

I like subculture. I like gay culture.
I think that the mainstream is boring unless there are other streams that are feeding it.
We need people to be different.

Rachel Maddow to AE on why she isn’t as crazy about gay marriage as some would expect her to be (being herself in long-term monogamous relationship etc.)

[K] Thanks to Dr. Maddow, my thoughts exactly.

read the whole article. I love Rachel Maddow.

FACT: When I tell you I’m a lesbian please don’t respond with, “My friend has an aunt that’s a lesbian.” It won’t make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside just because you know another queer person
